YOLO COUNTY, California -- The trend toward transportation using Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) is catching on quickly. Discussions are underway between transportation consultants and local agencies including the Cities of Woodland and Davis, and Yolo County to explore a unique alternative approach to transportation planning that will save energy and reduce auto emissions. City officials are in a position to examine the feasibility of Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) and bicycle routes that would enable any resident to travel safely between the cities of Woodland and Davis.

The concept is to develop and construct a 6 mile route that will link Davis and Woodland. Not at all like a freeway, designing a land-use friendly E-way (or electric vehicle pathway) will have numerous benefits. This route will provide access for alternative modes of transportation, improve air quality, reduce fuel consumption, and provide for connectivity that will preserve existing infrastructure and surrounding farmlands. For work, or for play, NEVs are used for leisure travel and short local trips. NEV drivers can commute to classes or to work. NEVs offer increased mobility for aging and disabled drivers. Local trips and eco-tourism will strengthen local commerce. The NEV route will offer convenient travel to public transit depots. This route can also be utilized by bicyclists.
An experienced team of Transportation consultants are hoping to begin work on a Feasibility Report for the Yolo County, Woodland-Davis region. The Report would identify where Class I, II and III connections would be feasible. The goal is to provide a "seamless" connection between the cities with logical and safe transition points between the three classes of lanes. In addition, feasibility and integration of all modes of transportation (bikes, autos, and pedestrians) will be studied. Engineers will work closely with local officials to develop unique solutions to preserve the rural character of the area.

Dave Morris of Woodland states, "As owner/manager of the Rice Mill Lofts, I highly support the proposed E-Way. I have personally driven along the majority of a route that will be a proposed alternative. It will be a very scenic and inviting pathway for travelers. I highly endorse this project."
The planning team includes MHM Engineers and Surveyors, TCC Consulting, and Fehr & Peers Transportation Consultants. The team is considered a leader in 'Smart Growth', and transportation planning for NEVs, bicycle, and pedestrian planning. MHM Engineers and Surveyors is based in Roseville, California and works for the City of Lincoln in their development of the City's NEV Transportation Plan.
