July 26, 2008. Any doubts about the rarity of GEMs in Lincoln would have been dispelled by a drive past McBean Park last Friday. Nearly 100 Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs) lined up for a service inspection by factory technicians who converged on Lincoln for this special event. Continuing an annual tradition, representatives from Chrysler's Global Electric Motorcars (GEM) held an all-day event to talk with drivers, answer questions, inspect vehicles, and show off the latest electric cars. Rick Kasper, the President of GEM, was even on-hand to greet current and future GEM owners.
Lincoln's award-winning "NEV Transportation Plan" and unique cross-town NEV route have paved the way for residents to travel by electric car to local destinations. Motivated by the rising cost of gas, dependence on foreign oil, and concerns about the environment, a growing number of people have purchased these plug-in vehicles for local travel. While there is no official count, some estimates place the number of NEVs in Lincoln at over 500--a number that seems to grow every day.
GEM expressed appreciation to the City for its support of NEVs, and presented city council member Kent Nakata with a check for $500. The money will be used for NEV signage at the entrances to the City. You can learn more about Neighborhood Electric Vehicles in Lincoln by visiting www.lincolnev.com.
