Global Electric Motorcars (GEM)

You'll see more GEMs in Lincoln than any other electric vehicle. After all, Lincoln was named the first "GEM friendly" city in the U.S. GEM is a division of DaimlerChrysler, and their electric cars are sold at local Chrysler dealers. The vehicles have a range of approximately 30 miles, and are available in many configurations. From pick-ups to six-seat transports, there's a good chance GEM has a car for you.

The popularity and high quality of GEMs make them a solid choice for anyone considering an electric vehicle. Since they are sold locally, at-home service is available. In addition, there are many after-market web sites that sell parts and upgrades for GEM vehicles. You won't go wrong with a GEM.

Ford Think

Ford Th!nk

Another popular vehicle in Lincoln is the Ford Th!nk. Unfortunately, it was discontinued, and is now only available on the "pre-owned" market. Parts are still generally available from Ford dealers, but you may get a quizzical look and a high price when you visit the service department. Notably, the Lincoln airport uses these vehicles at special events.

Golf Cart Style Vehicles

There are also local dealers who sell "NEVs" built on a golf cart chassis, usually made by well-known golf cart companies. Some of these vehicles are street-legal, but be careful. Ensure that the vehicle has headlights, brake lights, turn signals, as well as rear and side mirrors. This article has more information about the difference between golf carts and NEVs. A golf cart is NOT street legal outside of designated golf cart lanes. Make sure the vehicle you are buying is a true NEV.
